About Canoga Park, California
There are many songs sung about parks: Russia’s Gorki Park was mentioned in a ballad of the same name by rock group The Scorpions. MacArthur Park first appeared in song on Richard Harris’ 1968 album A Tramp Shining and was made famous with Donna Summer’s version in 1978. Central Park is mentioned by a number of bands, including musical legends Simon and Garfunkel in A Heart in New York.
Canoga Park CA, which lays in the western part of the San Fernando Valley, is mentioned in not one but two songs! That’s a good sign! Frank Zappa mentions this region of the City of Los Angeles in his song Joe’s Garage and Bryan Ferry mentions it in his song Can’t Let Go.
So, what is song-worthy Canoga Park CA like?
Long before it became a town it was simply part of the larger valley area surrounding Los Angeles. Near to the town was the Los Angeles aqueduct which brought water into the city from Owens Valley so the area became known as Owensmouth. In 1912 the town was officially founded and in 1917 became part of the larger Los Angeles area. In 1930 Owensmouth (which isn’t very singable!) changed its name to the much more lyric-worthy Canoga Park.
In the years since Canoga Park became Canoga Park, it has become the home to a number of industries, particularly those focusing on the aeronautics industry, including Boeing, Teledyne, Hughes Aircraft, and others. And, with a major industry like that in the area, it’s no surprise that secondary and supporting industries cropped up around town. That makes Canoga Park the perfect place to live for those involved in the aeronautics industry, in supporting industries, or those who want to be part of those thriving industries!
But that’s not all. Each year the National Civics League awards 10 American cities with the All-America award, recognizing the hard work of local citizens who band together to overcome challenges and achieve unusually successful results. In 2005 Canoga Park CA was one of the 10 recipients of this coveted award, demonstrating that it’s not just a city with an air-industry heritage but it’s a city with a mindset of constant improvement.
Canoga Park CA is also the home to a variety of other notable industries that support the area, including film and stuntworks, which offers lower cost and location shots for the busy entertainment industry that overflows in Los Angeles. As well, although it’s not a rural community any longer, Canoga Park maintains some of its rural roots, including agricultural and agri-business industries that still thrive there.
So, if you work or want to work in the aeronautical industry, or if you’re interested in offering supporting services to the film industry, or if you’re a singer looking for a muse, Canoga Park could be your place to live.
