Calabasas, CA: Demographics and Industry

Those people moving to the Los Angeles who area most committed to the environment — both enjoying and preserving it — will be particularly interested in Calabasas CA. This city in the San Fernando Valley has been turning heads for its concerted efforts to enjoy a natural atmosphere without leaving harmful footprints… and it is well known for welcoming high-tech industry to the area.

Located in the Santa Monica Mountains, the city of Calabasas has gone to great lengths to preserve its open spaces and to retain the geographical distinctions of its communities. It has recognized the fact that its unique location behind the hills has afforded it the opportunity and responsibility to keep the air as crisp, cool and clean as it was when people began settling here. Because the temperature is as much as 8 degrees cooler than neighboring communities, those living here can relax in a more comfortable temperature while enjoying a slight reprieve on air conditioning bills! You’d be surprised just how much difference 8 degrees makes! As your car climbs the hills after a long day at work, you’ll feel the stresses of work drop with each dropping degree.

Calabasas also operates its own library, television station and public transportation in addition to those supplied by Greater LA. The trolleys and shuttles zooming around Calabasas confirm that this is a community that is dedicated to carving its own niche in the area while minimizing the mark on the environment.

Mirroring the attention to the environment is the attention Calabasas gives to technology. While tech companies come and go, they seem to be drawn like a magnet to the area: Calabasas considered the “technology corridor”, an area that is home to a number of twenty-first century companies providing services and technology to our new, internet-connected global economy.

In 2000 Calabasas was a city of just over 23,000 residents. The ethnic diversity is not as varied as some neighboring communities, but is welcoming all the same. Almost 84% of the residents are White, with Asian and Latino making up almost 8% and 5% respectively. The Asian residents are predominantly Chinese (2.3%), Korean (1.8%), Indian (1.3%), and Japanese (1%). There is a notable Filipino presence as well. The largest designations within the remainder of the population are African American and Native American.

Recent statistics designated the poverty level of Calabasas as very low: 2.1% of families and 3.3% of individuals were found to be below the poverty line, compared with American averages of 9.2% and 12.4%. This is impressive and suggests that the people who live here take care of their own while ensuring that living standards are maintained.

Prospective home-buyers in the San Fernando Valley region will be intrigued by this community that prides itself on preserving and enjoying a high quality of life. If we want to leave a good earth for our children, we need to tread softly. And Calabasas is a city that does just that!

The twenty-first century will be marked with technological change and environmental awareness and Calabasas is a city that is leading the charge.
