Buying a Vacation Home

Buying a Vacation Home

Do you find yourself consistently vacationing in the San Fernando Valley area? Are you tired of staying with relatives? Is the hotel lobby feeling less and less inviting and the restaurant food losing its appeal? If you are looking to buy a vacation home in or around Los Angeles, here are a few things to consider.

The first thing to be sure about is where exactly you want to have your vacation home. Perhaps you have vacationed consistently in one area enough to be sure of such a move; however, if you are merely in the dreaming stage, a visit or two might be in order. Spend some time there before you lock yourself in. Drive around some of the neighborhoods and get used to the area. If you find a central location for your excursions that feels like a second home, then you may have found the right place to put down some roots. There are many cities in the San Fernando Valley area where you can buy property or own a second home.

The next thing to ask yourself is how often you think you will be there, which will inform you as to how big of a vacation home you’d like.

If it is only a few weeks out of the year, perhaps you want to consider purchasing a time-share. Getting just the right partnership allows you to own a certain portion of a place (in time), and share the maintenance costs and investment risks with others. This option makes a vacation home that much more attainable for people who might not be ready to go the whole way.

Or, if you’d prefer something more permanent but less work-intensive, consider a condo. For a relatively small condo fee, you can have the peace of mind that your second home is safe and maintained while you are away.

But sometimes a home is exactly what you need, especially if you like your privacy… and being able to feel like you’re at home! Owning a home in the San Fernando Valley – even a second home – is a wise investment because land generally appreciates. What’s more, you can always choose to make this home your first home should you want to move closer to the action!

Regardless of what kind of vacation home you plan to purchase, you have to put some thought into how you are going to maintain and secure it when you are not there. If it is close enough to visit on weekends from time to time you are in good shape. If not you will need to see if anyone lives there year-round and can check the place out for you.

Or, if you’re headed just outside of the San Fernando Valley, you might be looking for a cottage on a lake or in the mountains. Then you need to make sure it has access to the amenities and services that you may require, such as septic systems, running water, energy, and telephone and internet (depending on how rustic you want this place to be!)

If you are thinking about something like the Greater Los Angeles area because of the Hollywood attractions, the beaches, and other recreational opportunities, consider the advantage of something in the San Fernando Valley. Valley neighborhoods such as Calabasas or Sherman Oaks, among others, might make a great place to settle in for weeks at a time and serve as a wonderful hub for seeing the sights.

A vacation home is not only for recreational purposes. As is most often the case with real estate, it is also a smart investment. Although a second home somewhere such as the San Fernando Valley might have a significant up front cost, it has considerable equity and resale potential, besides what it saves you in hotel costs and offers in regard to holiday options.
